Documentary maker Todd Sampson has demonstrated how kids view their mums and dads differently with a brutal Father’s Day revelation.

The Australian advertising guru took to Twitter to share a photo of the handmade card he received on Sunday from daughter Coco and son Jet, snapping it alongside the Mother’s Day card his wife Neomie was handed in May.

While Neomie’s enormous card is elaborate and colourful with a heartwarming poem and the word ‘love’ written all over it, Todd’s is notably duller and about one sixth the size.

His card simply says ‘Father’s Day’ in straight black lettering and the only illustration is a half-drawn smiley face with two lines for eyes and a tiny red mouth.

The stark contrast sparked amused responses online, with one man writing: ‘Am tipping you’re not alone!’

A second said: ‘Equality works both ways, they’ve skewed the teaching of this in our education system it appears.’

A third shared a photo of his own Father’s Day card, which was just a sheet of lined copybook paper folded over with ‘Dad’ scrawled and underlined on the front.

‘You got a masterpiece!’ he wrote.

A woman chimed in with a photo of the gifts she and her husband had received for their respective days – a sequined, heart-shaped purse for her and a wireless phone charger for him.

Others poked fun at the thought of Todd – who often deep dives into psychology in his films – over-analysing the cards.

‘Gold! I can just imagine how much more you’re compelled to read into that with your creative advertising brain,’ one man wrote.

Another added: ‘Ouch!’
