Ballan crash: Teen driver arrested after fatal collision

A suspected home invader led police on a high-speed chase before crashing into a parked car, killing his young female passenger.

Police allege the boy, aged 17, stole a van in Ballan, northwest of Melbourne, about 2.30 on Tuesday afternoon.

He led police on a 100km/h chase along the Western Highway, which ended just four minutes later when he slammed into a truck.

The female passenger, aged in her teens, died on impact but the driver was able to escape from the mangled wreckage of the car and flee the scene.

Police arrested the man later in the afternoon after he allegedly stole another car from a farmhouse and made his way to Wendouree, Ballarat.

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the car was parked legally on the side of the freeway when it was struck by the speeding van.

He added that the pursuit lasted less than five minutes.

‘Police put their lights and sirens on to pull over the driver but he made the conscious decision not to stop and it’s ended in tragedy for the young girl involved,’ he said.

‘This is a tragedy that just didn’t need to happen. As soon as the crash happened, the young male fled the scene and found another vehicle which he stole and has driven to a house in Ballarat.

The dead woman is yet to be identified, and an investigation into the crash will be carried out under the supervision of Professional Standards Command.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said there were no updates on Wednesday morning in relation to the arrest of the boy.
