Sources told the publication he chose the specific regional papers because the areas they cover hold ‘personal memories’ for him.

The star was born in Liverpool and has gigged in Manchester with the Beatles, Wings and also as a solo artist. He has also owned High Park Farm in Kintyre, Scotland, since 1966.

‘Grandude and his four chillers are looking for their adventure-loving Nandude. Nandude has traversed the thickest jungles and sailed the deepest oceans, always to return with stories to tell. But she’s been gone far longer than we expected!

‘Grandude needs your help! Nandude loves playing her accordion. If you listen out, you might hear her before you see her. Have YOU seen Nandude? #Where’sNandude #I’veSeenNandude!’

The new book will continue the adventures of Grandude and his grandchildren as they set off on a quest to find their music-loving grandmother, Nandude.

In 1977, he used the pseudonym Percy ‘Thrills’ Thrillington for his album of the same name and took out similarly cryptic ads in a variety of British newspapers.

In a statement, Paul – who has eight grandchildren – said: ‘I’m really happy with how ‘Hey Grandude!’ was received as this was a very personal story for me, celebrating Grandudes everywhere and their relationships and adventures with their grandchildren.

‘I love that it has become a book read to grandkids at bedtime all around the world. I always said if people liked the first book and there was an appetite for more I would write some further adventures for Grandude – so he’s back and this time with his special invention, Grandude’s green submarine!’

Illustrator Kathryn Durst will also return to the series to draw the pictures for the second book.

In her own statement, she added: ‘I am so thrilled to be collaborating with Paul again on Grandude’s Green Submarine.

‘I think this is the adventure book we all need during this time, when everyone is stuck at home and longing to travel to exciting new places.

‘I really enjoyed drawing the newest character in the book, Nandude, particularly because we both share a love of playing the accordion!’

It comes after last week Paul and his wife Nancy Shevell were recently spotted in his home town of Liverpool, delighting fans.

They toured the city’s famous Lime Street station before queuing up for a trip to Nowhere, Man at a bus stop in Heswell, on the Wirrall.

Local resident Colin Newitt told the Liverpool Echo after sighting the family: ‘So we had been to Parkgate for a meal with our son Mason when I heard my wife shouting ‘look there’s Paul.’ He shouted back ‘You alright.’

‘I then told him that I went to the same school as him. He asked me which one and I said Liverpool Institute. He asked me who was my teacher and said I can’t remember but that Mr Parker was the head.

‘The lights then changed and we had to go. I shouted ‘See ya’ and he waved goodbye. He had just got out of a car with his daughter Stella.’

Sir Paul’s appearance came after he paid tribute to Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts after his death aged 80 in August.

Sharing a video on Twitter, Sir Paul addressed his followers in the candid clip, hailing Charlie as ‘a rock’ and ‘fantastic drummer’ before revealing: ‘I knew he was ill, but I didn’t know he was this ill.’

Charlie’s death was confirmed shortly before Beatles rocker Paul released his clip, with a statement confirming he had ‘passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family’.
