Amazon Prime Video cancels Back to the Rafters weeks after releasing the six-episode reboot


Back to the Rafters has been cancelled by Amazon Prime Video.

The six-episode reboot of the popular Australian drama series Packed to the Rafters had been released on the streaming giant on September 17.

An Amazon Prime Video spokesperson told TV Tonight the final episode of the season ‘left the Rafters family in a happy space’.

The company said: ‘Back to the Rafters was always at the top of the list of Amazon Australia Scripted Original series to commission, and we are proud to have partnered with Seven Studios to bring the much-loved Rafters back to customers.

‘It was a well-rounded six-part season and the final episode left the Rafters family in a happy space.’

The series saw original cast members Rebecca Gibney, Erik Thomson, Hugh Sheridan, Angus McLaren, Michael Caton and George Houvardas reprise their roles.

Dave (Erik Thomson) and Julie Rafter (Rebecca Gibney) returned to Sydney from their home in the country to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary. 

But the visit reignited Julie’s love for city life, putting her and Dave at odds. 

The series also saw the older Rafter children come to terms with adult challenges.

Ben (Hugh Sheridan) returned as a newly married man to Cassie (HaiHa Le), who hoped to start a family, but not without a few hiccups on the way.

The original Packed to the Rafters aired on Channel Seven for six seasons from 2008 to 2013.
