Tottenham Supporters’ Trust insist sacked boss Nuno Espirito Santo was ‘clearly not the right fit’ and want reassurances over the club’s ‘philosophy and vision’ after two years of ‘obvious regression’

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust have claimed Nuno Espirito Santo was ‘clearly not the right fit’ for the club following his dismissal as they call on Daniel Levy and the board to put the fans first.

Nuno was sacked on Monday after just four months in charge with Tottenham’s dismal defeat to Manchester United on Saturday delivering the final blow.

The team’s underperformance had been a concern among the club’s hierarchy for several weeks and the latest loss garnered an alarming reaction from the fans.

But, as the mouthpiece for supporters, the THST have said they take no pleasure in Nuno’s dismissal and hailed him for conducting himself with ‘integrity, good grace and civility’, despite not being the right fit for the club.

In a statement, the supporters’ trust said: ‘We take no pleasure in seeing the fourteenth manager of ENIC’s reign depart the Club today.

‘Nuno Espirito Santo conducted himself with integrity, good grace and civility throughout his short time at Spurs and, although clearly not the right fit for Tottenham, we wish him and his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias well for the future.’

THST’S FULL STATEMENT

‘We take no pleasure in seeing the fourteenth manager of ENIC’s reign depart the Club today.

‘Nuno Espirito Santo conducted himself with integrity, good grace and civility throughout his short time at Spurs and, although clearly not the right fit for Tottenham, we wish him and his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias well for the future.

‘Of immediate concern now is where our Club goes next. We reiterate the questions around strategy and vision first posed to the Club’s Board earlier in October. There is growing concern among fans about the direction of travel at Tottenham Hotspur. Fans want and deserve to know what the short and long-term plans are, on and off field, how the Club’s Board is correcting past mistakes to avoid repetition, what key milestones are being set and how they are measuring success.

‘Fans want reassurance that the Club’s Board has a clear philosophy and vision, and the ability to implement it. Bland statements about being focused on success on the pitch and football families are not sufficient.

‘For two years now, there has been obvious regression. The Club’s Board needs to show unequivocally that they have both listened to the voices of concerned fans and are acting positively on those.

‘Now is the time for strong communication and accountability. We call on the Board of Tottenham Hotspur to put Fans and Football first at what is a vital time in the history of our Club.’

The former Wolves boss was the fourteenth manager of ENIC’s reign and the club are reportedly already lining up Antonio Conte as number 15.

But the THST are concerned over the direction the club is heading in and claim the fans deserve to know the short and long-term plans for progress at Spurs.

‘Of immediate concern now is where our Club goes next,’ the trust’s statement added.

Daniel Levy and the board’s refusal to meet with the Supporters’ Trust left fans exasperated last month, leading them to produce an open letter which put 13 questions forward.

The supporters sought answers on a number of key issues ranging from the footballing DNA to the use of revenue generated from non-football activities.

THST’S QUESTIONS FOR THE SPURS BOARD

1. There is a widespread feeling of a lack of direction at the Club:

What is your vision for THFC?

What are your objectives and how are you measuring progress against those objectives?

Where do you want the Club to be in five years’ time, on and off the pitch?

2. Does the Board think we’ve gone forward or backwards in a footballing context over the last two years?

3. Can you expand on Daniel Levy’s comment on restoring the DNA of the Club, and provide examples of how that is being achieved?

4. You have said your focus has always been on achieving success on the pitch. Do you think that one trophy in 20 years is an acceptable outcome?

5. Are you aware that there is a widely-held perception that football is not the priority at THFC? What would you say to Spurs supporters who feel that way?

6. It would reassure supporters if you could provide a clear explanation of where profits earned from non-football events at the stadium go?

7. Can you give an update on stadium naming rights?

8. Could you give a clear explanation of the relationship between different parts of the business, and how resources are used across them?

9. How does the Club ensure that its property development arm does not act as a drain on resources and management focus? What is the Club’s involvement in property developments undertaken by related parties? How does the Club ensure that asset disposals to related parties are undertaken at fair market value?

10. Supporters made their opposition to the proposed European Super League clear. Can you give a guarantee the Club won’t support any attempt to revive that or any similar project?

11. Have the fines and costs incurred by the Club’s involvement in the ESL been paid from the personal finances of owners or directors, or from Club funds?

12. Can you elaborate on what has happened to your plans for the Club Advisory Panel and the Fan Director on the Board, announced in April? We submitted plans for a Supervisory Board, INEDs and a Fan Director in a two-tier Board structure that would embed football and fans at the heart of the Club. Will you discuss those plans and seek an agreed outcome which is supported by fans?

13. We also asked the Board to examine creating a share ownership structure that could broaden ownership of the Club and could potentially provide an injection of cash. Can you update on how this is progressing?
