- Girls as young as 13 caught drinking alcohol on elite private school camp
- Eleven Year 8 students hid vodka and tequila in water bottles during the camp
- The school only found out about it once parents came forward to teachers
- Five students have been suspended for their behaviour and six put in detention
A group of teenage girls from an elite high school have been suspended and handed detentions after they were caught drinking alcohol at camp.
Eleven Sydney Church of England Girls’ Grammar School (SCEGGS) Darlinghurst students, some as young as 13, hid vodka and tequila in water bottles while on a school trip to Castle Mountain on the Hawkesbury River.
The school was not aware of the scandal until parents notified Principal Jenny Allum four days after the camp ended, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

Parents claimed the girls were drunk while abseiling down a cliff on the camp, but the school is adamant the drinking happened at night.
Ms Allum said the underage drinking was a ‘one-off silly error of judgement’, and was a ‘misguided attempt’ by the girls to ‘satisfy their curiosity’.
She said they have been punished appropriately for their behaviour and will undergo counselling. The punishments will be permanently recorded on their school records.
SCEGGS Darlinghurst is one of the most expensive private schools in Australia, with fees of more than $33,000 a year.
