Soap opera legend Anne Jeffreys dead at age 94

Soap opera legend Anne Jeffreys has died at the age of 94.

The blonde beauty was best known for her role as the wealthy socialite Amanda Barrington on the long-running General Hospital. She was on the series from 1984 until 2004. She also had a recurring role opposite Jane Wyman on Falcon Crest.

Her General Hospital co-stars were quick to send out their condolences. ‘God bless the beautiful + talented Anne Jeffreys,’ tweeted Jacklyn Zeman. ‘We will always remember you with love + appreciation.’

Jeffreys also appeared on the soap Port Charles.

She was born Anne Carmichael in 1923 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She began modeling in New York then debuted in La Boheme in 1940. 

She soon moved to Hollywood and starred in the 1942 Rodgers & Hart adaptation of I Married an Angel, starring with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald in their last pairing. 

The star started working at a young age and had notable roles in the 1940s series Dick Tracy and the 1950s show Topper.

She took a brief hiatus then came back to TV with Love American Style, LA Law and Murder She Wrote.

She was also on Bonanza, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Battlestar Galactica.

In the 1980s she was in Finder Of Lost Loves.

And she also popped up as David Hasselhoff’s mother on Baywatch.

She stood out with a recurring role on Falcon Crest opposite Jane Wyman.

Jeffreys’ death was first reported last night by George Pennacchio of Los Angeles’ KABC. 

Before she came to Hollywood she worked on the stage.

She was in My Romance on Broadway and Kiss Me Kate.

It was during her New York run of Kate that she met and married fellow Broadway actor Sterling.

The couple were married until Sterling’s death in 2006. They had three sons.

‘My life has been a full, happy and active one,’ Jeffreys said, ‘and I hope I’ll always be as busy as a blind dog in a meat shop. I thrive on activity.’
