Great British Bake Off creators ‘to launch show in search of next generation of super hairstylists later this year’

The creators of The Great British Bake Off will launch a hairdressing show on E4 later this year, according to reports.

Titled The Big Blowout, the new competition hails from Love Productions and ‘is currently seeking the next generation of super hairstylists to take part’.

It comes eight years after the BBC’s show Hair – fronted by Steve Jones and later Katherine Ryan – was ditched by the channel for ‘copying Bake Off’s formula’.

Speaking about The Big Blowout, one insider told The Mirror: ‘The Big Blowout, for E4, is seeking stylists who are hungry for a new challenge.’

They added: ‘[Stylists] who want to test their skills.’

They also shared that the formula will be ‘brand new, unique and different to anything that has gone before’.

Great British Bake Off producers forced the BBC to cut Hair in 2014 due to similarities between the two programmes.

Hair launched on BBC3 and was initially hosted by Steve before moving to BBC2 where Katherine took over hosting duties.

It was judged by Denise McAdam – a royal hairdresser – and celebrity stylist Alain Pichon.

Independent production company Love Productions threatened to sue the BBC and even hired Jonathan Coad, a TV copyright specialist.

BBC bosses argued that the three-challenge format was devised by MasterChef, however the channel ended up settling out of court.

The settlement amount was not disclosed.
