A woman who has been divorced twice before the age of 30 has hit back at critics who mocked her for being a life coach, saying ‘mistakes don’t disqualify you.’
Marissa Baker, 30, from Naples, Florida, has been candid about the work she’s done to heal from her failed marriages on her TikTok account. Earlier this month, she opened up about whether she wants to get married for a third time.
‘People after I tell them I’ve been married and divorced twice before 30: “Would you ever get married again?”‘ she captioned a video of herself dancing to a cover of Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man.’
Marissa Baker, 30, from Naples, Florida, was mocked for being a life coach after revealing that she was married and divorced twice
Earlier this month, she posted a video about how people ask her if she wants to get married again after being divorced twice
Baker then responded to the question with a line from the song, writing: ‘I think it’s gonna be a long, long time.’
The clip has been viewed more than 612,000 times, and some commenters were quick to judge her for her divorces and her chosen career path.
‘Life coach that’s been divorced twice….best joke I’ve heard all day,’ one person wrote, while another asked: ‘Did being a life coach begin before or after the 2 failed marriages..?’
‘Why would anybody hire a life coach [who’s] been married and divorced twice? That’s like hiring a tutor that failed out of school, twice,’ someone else argued.
In a follow-up video, Baker admitted she was baffled by how ‘angry’ people are that she has been divorced twice before 30.

‘I share my story, all parts of my story — good, bad, and ugly — because I think it’s important that people see the human in other people,’ she explained. ‘We all have our stuff. None of us have it together. It’s quite easy to judge someone for their life and the mistakes that they’ve made.
‘But I am quite literally shocked at the amount of people willing to judge a person without even knowing them,’ she added. ‘But that doesn’t matter because people’s opinions at this point are pretty irrelevant.’
Baker later addressed the negative comments about her being a life coach in another clip, insisting: ‘You mistakes don’t disqualify you.’
She argued that she is actually ‘uniquely qualified’ to counsel others because of what she has been through.
‘I’ve gotten a lot of comments to the effect of “You’ve been through two divorces and you’re going to be a life coach?” or “Taking advice from you?”‘ she said.

Baker explained in another video that she openly talks about her divorces because she wants people to learn from her mistakes
‘And I just want to offer a reframe to all the people who are judging, or to all the people who are watching wondering, “Do my mistakes qualify me?” Obviously, the answer is no.
‘If you have been paying any attention at all, any person who is coaching on something or has become an expert in something. A lot of the time, they are coaching on the thing that they’ve overcome.’
Baker said she has seen coaches who specialize in binge eating or singleness because they’ve struggled with binge eating or spent a long time being single.
She compared this to how people become fitness coaches after learning how to sculpt their own physiques through tailored workouts and nutrition plans.
‘So what if — and here me out on this — your mistakes, not only do they not disqualify you, but they uniquely qualify you for what it is you’re supposed to be doing and your purpose in this world?’ she asked.
Critics have called her everything from ‘used goods’ to ‘damaged’ because of her divorces
Baker wants her followers to know that they aren’t defined by their mistakes
Baker shared that she has ‘been through a lot’ and ‘overcome a lot’ over the years, including molestation, drug abuse in her family, binge eating, and her divorces.
‘All of those things that I’ve gone through uniquely qualify me to help coach other people to not make the same mistakes that I did,’ she explained.
‘So, yeah, maybe I could sit here and listen to these comments and be like, I’m not qualified. Or I could make the best of what I’ve been through and try to help other people that maybe don’t see the light yet.
‘And, so, if you’re going through something, or maybe you’ve been through something and feel disqualified, I just want to encourage you,’ she added. ‘It’s OK. We all make mistakes, and guess what? You’re not disqualified.
‘Actually, I’d say you’re overqualified.’
