Homeless man who killed mother and son jailed for life

Aaron Barley has been jailed for life with a minimum of 30 years

A homeless man who turned on the family that gave him shelter and knifed to death a defenceless mother and her 13-year-old son has been jailed for a minimum of 30 years.

Aaron Barley, 24, brutally stabbed Tracey Wilkinson, 50, and schoolboy Pierce after sneaking into their home in Stourbridge, West Midlands.

Husband Peter Wilkinson, 47, was also critically injured in the attack on March 30 but survived following life-saving surgery.

After leaving him for dead, Barley stole his Land Rover Discovery and led police on a frantic chase, weaving between traffic and mounting the pavement before crashing into a wall.

Barley – who was fed, given a job and provided with accommodation after Mrs Wilkinson saw him begging outside a Tesco – later told arresting officers his only regret was failing to kill the entire family.

He has refused to reveal his motives but the court previously heard the Wilkinsons cancelled his mobile phone contract just three days before the frenzied attack.

At Birmingham Crown Court today Mrs Justice Carr jailed Barley for life after he pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

He was given a ten year sentence for the attempted murder of Mr Wilkinson, which will run concurrently.

Wearing a blue prison tracksuit, he showed no emotion as he heard the sentence.

The judge condemned Barley for his total lack of remorse, saying: ‘You knew you were destroying this family. That was what you intended.’
