The Hawaiian, riding an 11-fight win streak, has not lost since a decision defeat to Conor McGregor back in 2013.
But his first defence of the strap will be a tough one as he faces UFC veteran and former lightweight champion Edgar, who is looking to become just the fourth two-weight world champion in the promotion’s history.
The 35-year-old dropped to the 145-pound division four years ago in search of a second belt but came up short on both attempts against Aldo.
But the rise of a new champion, and back-to-back wins over Jeremy Stephens and Yair Rodriguez, has seen the American get a third shot.
The rest of the card for UFC 218 is still coming together, with Alistair Overeem vs Francis Ngannou the only other confirmed fight so far.
