‘I just can’t see how they stay up’: Paul Merson insists Everton WILL get relegated from the top-flight as he describes their remaining fixtures as ‘atrocious’ and claims they MUST win their next game against Newcastle
- Everton’s defeat to Wolves was their fourth straight defeat in the top-flight
- They are 17th in the table but level on points with Watford who are behind them
- Paul Merson believes the Toffees are in big trouble and will get relegated
- He attributes this to their tough fixtures coming up in the rest of the season
Paul Merson believes Everton are in big trouble due to their tough fixture list for the remainder of the season.
Following their defeat to Wolves at the weekend, the Toffees are 17th in the league but level points with Watford below them.
Everton do have games in hand over the teams around them but Merson feels that this won’t be enough for Frank Lampard’s side to survive.

Paul Merson believes the Toffees are in danger of going down due to their tough fixture list
He told Sky Sports: ‘I don’t know if Everton think they’re too good just to go and get a point somewhere, because points mount up.
‘At the moment they’re chasing their tails. Wolves at home wasn’t a good day at the office, so just get a point – you’ve got to start a run somewhere.
‘I’m looking at Everton’s fixtures and the way they’re playing and I think they’re in big trouble. I think they’re the ones to go now. You’ve only got to look at their fixtures – they’re atrocious. I just can’t see how they stay up.
Merson questioned where Everton will be able to pick up points despite their games in hand
‘They’ve got games in hand, but where do they get points? You look at the Brentford game but that could be too late. I think they’ve got to beat Newcastle.’
After their game with Newcastle on Thursday, they have a tricky run of fixtures with four teams in the top six.
In that period they travel to West Ham, host Manchester United, play Liverpool at Anfield in the Merseyside derby, before facing Chelsea at Goodison Park.

They also have away trips to Leicester and Arsenal, a home clash with Arsenal and games against Watford and Crystal Palace which need to be arranged.
Their defeat to Wolves was the fourth straight defeat for Lampard’s side in the league.
It proved extra costly as Brentford, Leeds and Watford all picked up massive wins.
Merson also claimed that he believes Brentford are now safe and that one more win for Leeds might be enough for Jesse Marsch’s side.
