Paul Scholes urges Manchester United to go after either Antonio Conte or Thomas Tuchel

‘They’re a top class coach away from getting back to anything near where they should be’: Paul Scholes urges Manchester United to go after either Tottenham boss Antonio Conte or Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel this summer

  • The former midfielder feels they need a manager to strike fear into their players
  • United have failed to win any silverware since winning the Europa League in 2017

Paul Scholes has urged his former club Manchester United to go out and get either Antonio Conte or Thomas Tuchel from their Premier League rivals as they need a manager that strikes fear into its players.

The former midfielder feels the Red Devils are not as far away from success as most make out and the simple addition of an elite coach would push them in the right direction.

When pressed for who he would try tempt to Old Trafford, he quickly suggested Tottenham boss Conte or Chelsea manager Tuchel.

They should also go for Thomas Tuchel

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick is set to depart the Red Devils in the summer unless they can somehow pull off a miracle this season – forcing the board to hand him the job on a permanent basis.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag appear to be the front-runners for the hot seat, but Scholes feels they should perhaps opt for a more left-field option to help them end their silverware drought and become one of Europe’s elite once again.

Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes said: ‘I would go for Conte or Tuchel now possibly. He might be available at the end of the year.

‘Them two are top class coaches, who i think strike fear into players, and win that’s the most important thing.

‘Either one of them coaches will make this a lot better squad, ok they need additions, but people are saying they need four or five by spending £200million or whatever it is.

‘There is a group of players there that are good and could be made a lot better by a top quality elite coaches.’

United have failed to win any silverware since their Europa League success back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

Scholes added: ‘I think they’re a top class coach away from getting back to anything near where they should be.

‘You look at the group of players, it’s not that bad, there is some good players.

‘Talented players, but for the last two years, maybe even longer they’ve not had an elite coach.

‘To be an elite coach of a big football club, you need to have special qualities, and you need to be able to get a team to be able to play how you want them to play.’
