‘What is there to achieve?’: Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United’s season is OVER after after their Champions League exit… while he claims managers might choose other clubs rather than be part of the rebuilding process at Old Trafford

  • Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League to Atletico Madrid
  • Their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford saw Madrid go through 2-1 on aggregate
  • Ferdinand says United’s season is over the despite the race to make the top four
  • He also insisted managers might not want to be part of the rebuilding process

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has insisted he can’t see a positive ending to the current campaign for his former side.

Ralf Rangnick’s side were booted out of the Champions League with a 2-1 aggregate defeat to reigning LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid.

United will finish the campaign without a trophy but still have something to fight for, in terms of the race to make the top four and make sure they’re back in the Champions League next season.

Ferdinand though doesn’t fancy United’s chances due to Arsenal’s strong position in the league.

‘For Man United, the season to me seems over – what is there to really achieve?’ he said on BT Sport.

‘(In the Premier League United) are floundering behind Arsenal if they win their games in hand.

‘Tonight was really a reflection of what the season has been like – there have been moments where they have been good, but far too often it is Jekyll and Hyde performances. We did not see enough quality.’

Following their Champions League exit, more focus will be put on the search to find a permanent manager for the end of the season.

Whoever steps in will likely be part of a rebuilding process, with new signings expected this summer, as well as some exits.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are among the favourites for the hotseat.

Ferdinand though believes top managers could look elsewhere than Old Trafford.

On the rebuilding job at Old Trafford, Ferdinand said: ‘There’s so much work to be done.

‘If you are looking to come here, it is a great project to be a part of, but I think managers might look at others clubs because there is less pressure where the spotlight isn’t on them as much.’
