Las Vegas red hat hero is identified after saving women

Social media users have identified a man in a red hat who heroically helped a number of women escape the Las Vegas massacre by throwing them over a 15-foot fence to safety.

Anthony Chavez had been standing next to a group of women and their husbands at the Route 91 Harvest festival stage when the gunman opened fire on Sunday night.

Moments before the terror, the four women had posed for a photo together and Chavez, who was with his girlfriend at the time, was captured in the background wearing his red baseball hat.

When the gunfire erupted and panic set in, the group of women became separated from their husbands as the 22,000 concert-goers tried to outrun the barrage of bullets.

Trapped at the front of the stage, everyone around Chavez dropped to the ground as people around them were being shot.

Chavez decided the only way out was over the steel 15-foot barricade in front of them. He threw his girlfriend Deia Torres over before going back for the women and anyone else who needed help getting over the fence.

In the panic, the four women were separated from Chavez. They managed to get to safety and find their husbands, but they weren’t sure of the fate of the ‘hero in the red hat’ who saved them.

‘We are so thankful to the hero in the red hat that got our wives over the gate and under the stage to relative safety. We would like to know if he and his girlfriend made it so that we can thank him in the future,’ Larry Rorick wrote.

‘Our wives eventually made it out the back of the stage and over a 15 foot fence with about 40 people of the 22,000. They never saw the red hat again. Please help us find him if you know him.’

The Facebook post was shared thousands of times and eventually someone recognized the red hat man as Anthony Chavez.

Chavez, who is from Albuquerque, New Mexico but moved to Las Vegas three years ago, has now been in touch with all four women he helped rescue.

‘Finally heard from everyone around us at the concert. The friends we made in a short time we were together will be long lasting,’ he wrote on Facebook.

‘I did the best I could to help as many people as possible before I thought I lost my girlfriend in the chaos. I’m glad we all reconnected. Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected and to those who lost their lives.’
