Breathtaking photos show Blue Angels over San Francisco

The San Francisco Bay Area is buzzing with anticipation this weekend as the annual Fleet Week extravaganza is set to take place.

The Bay Area has hosted Fleet Week events nearly every Columbus Day weekend since 1981.

The event was canceled in 2013 due to budgetary issues, but was revived the year after.

At least one million people are expected to watch the famous air show along the San Francisco Bay waterfront which extends from the Ferry Building to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Fleet Week is a tradition in which active military ships that serve the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard return from overseas deployments and dock for a week in a number of major cities.

The highlight of the event will be the aerial show put on by the Blue Angels, the Navy’s flight demonstration squadron.

On Thursday afternoon, the Blue Angels held a practice in the skies above the Bay Area, dazzling spectators who heard the distinct roar of the jet engines which power the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets.

A number of Bay Area locals took to Twitter to share their excitement at seeing and hearing the Blue Angels in action – even though it was just a dry run.

The Blue Angels were joined in the skies by Team Oracle aerobatics pilot Sean Tucker.

Tucker and his team will also take part in the festivities this weekend.
