Jurgen Klopp set for new Liverpool contract talks in major U-turn on plans to quit in 2024

BREAKING NEWS: Jurgen Klopp set for new Liverpool contract talks in a major U-turn on his plans to quit in 2024, with his ‘tank refilled’ to pass a decade at Anfield – and discussions have already started

  • Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are currently pursuing an unprecedented quadruple
  • The German took over Liverpool in October 2015 and is adored at Anfield
  • Klopp has long been expected to step away when his contract ends in 2024

Liverpool are preparing to push ahead with new contract talks for Jurgen Klopp after being given encouragement the German would be open to extending his stay.

It had always been Klopp’s intention to leave Anfield when his current terms end in the summer of 2024 and he pressed that fact home as recently as March, saying: ‘that will be me, thank you very much.’

But Klopp has been revitalised this season and, to use an analogy, has petrol in the tank once again. Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, are well aware of this and will do their best to come to an agreement with him to remain at the helm.

Jurgen Klopp has signalled he would be open to extending his Liverpool stay beyond 2024

Mike Gordon, the President of FSG with whom Klopp has a close relationship, was at Anfield for the first leg of the Champions League clash with Villarreal and saw Liverpool take a significant step towards reaching the final with an authoritative 2-0 win.

Also in the crowd was Marc Kosicke, Klopp’s long-time agent and friend, and preliminary conversations have taken place about the best route forward. Klopp is the architect of everything Liverpool have achieved in the last seven years and his influence on the club is enormous.

Klopp has signed two contract extensions since he was initially appointed in October 2015.

The first – a six-year deal – was in June 2016 following his bright start, the second was in December 2019, six months after he had Liverpool to their sixth European Cup success.

It was always his plan to pass the baton in 2024 – being at Liverpool for nine years would have been his longest stint at a club as manager – but the landscape is changing and there is no doubt he is greatly excited about what this squad could achieve in the future.

Klopp is loyal to his staff and would want to see extensions for his right-hand men Pep Lijnders and Peter Kraweitz; other figures, such as Vitor Matos and goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, are held in high regard, too.

There will be one departure at Anfield this summer, with sporting director Michael Edwards leaving and expected to take a take break after 11 years at Anfield.

He will be replaced by Julian Ward, another man with whom Klopp has a strong bond.

With a number of players having signed long-term deals and some exciting additions, most notably Luis Diaz, having been made, Liverpool – who are chasing an unprecedented quadruple – want Klopp to continue to oversee what they believe will be a thrilling new era.
