J W Gacy’s chilling paintings of clowns go up for auction

Eerie pictures painted by serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who was the inspiration for Stephen King’s hit horror ‘It’, are set to fetch up to $9,000 (£7,000) each at an auction in England.

A number of chilling pictures even feature Pogo the Clown, the evil alter-ego Gacy used to lure children and young men before raping and killing them.

Dubbed the killer clown, Gacy worked as a children’s entertainer and murdered at least 33 teenagers and young men between 1972 and 1978.

He sometimes plied them with promises of alcohol and drugs in an attempt to gain their trust – but he would handcuff their hands together before killing them at his home, where the majority of his victims are buried.

Gacy eventually confessed to his crimes in December 1978 and was executed by lethal injection in May 1994.

The action is set to take place on October 15 at Mullock’s auctioneers in Shropshire. Among other items on sale include memorabilia from Henry Lee Lucas, who claims to have killed more than 3,000 people, Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland Strangler who killed 11, and a handwritten note from Ted Bundy.

Estimates suggest the 26 items from the twisted criminals will rack in a staggering £39,662.

Ben Jones, consultant at Mullock’s Auctioneers said: ‘We are often presented with interesting consignments within this type of industry and this is certainly an interesting subject that has been fascinating to catalogue.

‘What has been especially interesting, as is with most subjects of this nature, is the research conducted on the individuals involved. It was quite chilling at times to catalogue!

‘We are aware that there are collectors of this type of material across the world and do appreciate that this is a sensitive subject.

‘Many of the Serial Killers are now dead and therefore some items included within the selection may never be available again.’
