‘We bottled it… that’s unforgivable’: Piers Morgan takes aim at Mikel Arteta in the wake of Arsenal’s derby defeat and SLAMS club’s huge transfer spend, sale of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and poor recent record as they battle Spurs for a top-four spot
- Arsenal had the chance to wrap up fourth spot against Tottenham on Thursday
- However, the Gunners were comprehensively beaten by their local rivals
- The team conceded a penalty and had a man sent off in the first half of the game
- Piers Morgan accused the side of losing their nerve on the big occasion
- He hit out at Mikel Arteta as he complained about the team’s inconsistency
Piers Morgan was highly critical of Mikel Arteta during and after Arsenal’s 3-0 loss at the hands of Tottenham in the North London derby on Thursday.
The Gunners entered the contest knowing that a win would guarantee them a top-four finish but they never looked like getting the result they needed as Harry Kane scored a first half double, before Heung-min Son added a third shortly after the break.
Arsenal were somewhat the architects of their own downfall, conceding a needless penalty to gift Spurs their opener, while Rob Holding was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half. Morgan reacted furiously to the team’s capitulation.

The TV presenter posted a series of angry face emojis when Tottenham took the lead, prior to writing ‘FFS’ alongside more angry emojis as Antonio Conte’s side extended their advantage.
Morgan then took aim at Arteta in the second half as Tottenham cruised to victory, questioning why he should keep faith with the 40-year-old, who was recently handed a new contract at the club.
‘Can Arteta-crazed Arsenal fans remind me again why I should trust a process that involves spending £250m in 2yrs, giving our best striker to Barcelona, and losing 5 of our last 10 League games in crucial run-in with nothing else to play for? I’m struggling,’ he added.
After a humbling defeat, Arteta was in a defiant mood, blaming the officials by claiming ‘a beautiful game was destroyed’ by their decisions.

Morgan was having none of it, though, and hit back at Arteta’s post-match reaction.
‘Arteta can moan as much as he wants but we bottled it tonight, and in a North London Derby that’s unforgivable,’ he wrote on Twitter.
Arsenal are still one point clear of Tottenham with two games to go in the race for the final Champions League spot.
However, the momentum appears to have shifted Spurs’ way, and Arteta will now have to rally his side for their trip to Newcastle on Monday while potentially piecing together a make-shift defence, with Holding suspended, plus Gabriel and Ben White emerging as injury doubts.
