A North Carolina State University student who wanted to keep her emotional support cat in her dorm room has reached a settlement with the university.
Last year Laura Auman asked the university to allow her to keep her cat, Kifree, in her residence hall, saying that the assistance animal constitutes a reasonable accommodation for a disability.
The university refused her request, so Auman filed a federal discrimination complaint on the grounds that it was a violation of the Fair Housing Act.
