Darwin teen hands himself in to police over horse shooting

A teenager handed himself in to police over an alleged crossbow shooting of two horses which left beloved mare Pearly dead.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested and interviewed at Darwin Police Station on Thursday evening, a Northern Territory Police spokeswoman said.

‘Upon completion of the interview, the youth was released. In line with the Youth Justice Act, he will be considered for youth diversion on weapons and animal cruelty charges,’ she said.

Police have seized the crossbow allegedly used to shoot the two horses, and are investigating possible co-offenders, NT News reported.

A second horse was found with a suspected arrow wound to his rump just a day after popular mare Pearly was shot and killed by a crossbow.

Fannie Bay Equestrian Club shared a photo of the injury on Facebook, saying they found their champion horse Hollywood with a puncture under his tail.

The club believes Hollywood, a quarter horse gelding, could have been shot at the same time Pearly was, however they didn’t spot the wound until Thursday morning.

‘The blood had dried and hole clotted over … he was in obvious pain,’ the club wrote.

‘The vet had to open it up to see if part of the shaft was lodged inside.’

The bolt, which left a deep wound, is thought to have been pushed out as Hollywood ‘fled in pain’.

‘[He] had a lucky escape from the crossbow lunatic at FBEC,’ the club wrote.

Hollywood shared a paddock with Pearly, the 19-year-old Haflinger mare who was found with two arrows piercing the side of her body Wednesday afternoon.

The club shared the sickening photos to Facebook saying Pearly was a ‘gentle and well loved pony’ who taught a number of children to ride.

‘This horrible sight greeted one of our young members,’ the club wrote on social media.

‘[We] are shocked and horrified that someone could be so cruel, evil and stupid.

‘This idiot is dangerous.

‘RIP Pearly, you brought joy to many. You didn’t deserve this.’

Pearly received emergency surgery but died Wednesday night because the arrows were too long and caused severe internal damage.

Fannie Bay Equestrian Club president Mel Brenton said the club was in disbelief that someone would shoot a beloved children’s pet with a bow.

‘I’ve been a member of the club since 1979 and I’ve never seen anything like this,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

‘It has completely shocked and shattered the club and people are extremely sad, devastated and angry.

‘It’s not an accident, she was shot deliberately not once but twice. To do this to a defenceless animal makes me sick to my stomach.

‘People like to hunt and enjoy archery, but this isn’t sport, it’s animal cruelty. I’m disgusted, our kids are sad – she teaches kids to ride and was a beautiful animal who deserved better.’
