Aussie actress and Dumplin’ star Danielle Macdonald reveals how playing an opera singer in new film Falling for Figaro ‘terrified her’

Australian fan favourite Danielle Macdonald plays an aspiring opera singer in her new film, Falling for Figaro.

And the role terrified her, says the 31-year-old Dumplin’ star.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Friday, the actor – dubbed ‘the new Rebel Wilson’ – confessed the reason, saying: ‘I’m just not musical’.

‘Growing up, music was just something I was not good at,’ she said.

In the new comedy film, which is set in the UK, Danielle plays an American financial wiz, who has a secret wish to be an opera singer.

After getting a much sought after promotion, Millie (Danielle), quits to follow her dream.

Famed Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley appears as a high-priced voice-coach, who doesn’t think Millie has got what it takes.

Ironically, Danielle says had never even been to an opera before taking the part. 

Even though her singing does not appear in the final film, doing the performance scenes were a trial for the popular star.

‘I’m not a confident singer in any way, shape or form, but I did have to sing on set for this,’ she said.

‘Still, it doesn’t really completely erase the fear of doing it in the moment with, you know, an entire crew of 50 to 100 people watching you.’

Danielle even took lessons so that her miming would look convincing.

She also learnt how not to cringe when she did not hit the right notes.

Born in Sydney but now based in America, Danielle’s career has gone from strength to strength after first winning over critics and fans in indie fave Patti Cake$.

Other high-profile roles followed including the acclaimed Netflix drama Unbelievable and Stan’s The Tourist.

Falling for Figaro is directed by Ben Lewin and opens in Australian cinemas on July 14.
