Student dies in Sydney horror fire after his apartment burst into flames – as it’s revealed not ONE unit in the entire block is fitted with a working smoke alarm

Harrowing footage has emerged of a man screaming out for help from his top floor balcony as a fire ripped through his unit and tragically claimed the life of his flatmate.

Investigations are continuing into the fatal blaze which broke out in a unit complex  in Campbell Street, Parramatta, just before 2.45am on Monday.

Fire and Rescue NSW spent the rest of day doorknocking hundreds of residents in the western Sydney street after it was revealed not one unit in the burning complex was fitted with a working smoke alarm.

Footage from the scene shows a 20-year-old man raising the alarm on his balcony while his 27-year-old flatmate, an international student remained trapped inside the burning unit.

The older man was pulled unconscious from burning home by firefighters and rushed to hospital in a critical condition where he later died from his injuries

His younger flatmate was also rescued and taken to hospital to be treated for inhalation.  

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
