In a video by the Port Stephens staff, the koala can be seen with a nasty gash in her face and around one eye.

Sue Swain, a rescuer with the sanctuary, said Sahara is on the road to recovery.

‘[There was] a big drain in her face, her eye looks much better after the sutures came out,’ she said.

Ms Swain said there was a hole from the wound on Sahara’s face to the inside of her mouth.

‘There was chewed up leaf inside her mouth, that’s what led to the infection,’ she said.

‘Dr Don debrided it and flushed it out then sutured a drain in place that will come out in 3 days.

‘Poor little girl is having a very tough time. Hopefully she will heal quickly now.’
