A young Labor MP diagnosed with deadly kidney cancer has revealed how she initially dismissed her headache and tiredness as ‘being a working mum’.
NSW deputy Labor leader Prue Car, 39, is taking an extended period of leave to fight the large tumour found on her kidney.
Speaking to 3AW’s Ben Fordham about the ‘minor’ symptoms that lead her to get herself checked out, she said anyone worried about their health should seek immediate help.
Ms Car said her symptoms of tiredness and headaches didn’t ring any alarm bells, as she initially put them down to ‘being a mum and working full time’.
‘That is the message: Go to the doctor if you’re not feeling 100 per cent right,’ the mother-of-one said on Tuesday.
‘In my case, it sounds like they have found it early enough to deal with it and they can hopefully operate – and then I can get back to causing trouble for the Liberals in NSW.’
She also revealed that a member of her electorate of Londonderry, in Sydney’s north-west, rang to generously offer their own kidney after the news.
NSW Labor’s Deputy Leader Prue Car (pictured in March this year) has revealed one of her constituents offered her their kidney after her diagnosis announcement on Monday
‘That was a bit of a surprise,’ she explained.
Speaking about the moment she was told she had cancer, Ms Car detailed the horror of hearing that fateful word – and it what it meant for her family.
‘It’s more the shock about what was going to happen, making sure you take care of everyone,’ she said.
‘Hopefully I will be back on board, ready for the state election next year.’

Ms Car took to social media on Monday to say she will take extended leave as she prepares to fight the large cancerous tumour doctors found on her kidney.
She tweeted: ‘Friends, I have some hard news to share. Following some recent tests I was found to have a large tumour on my kidney.’
‘It would be no surprise for me to tell you this was quite a shock,’ she said. ‘I look forward to being back out and about soon fighting for our community.’
‘I am buoyed by such loving support from my wonderful family, friends, colleagues and my beloved local community – thank you for your support,’ she added.
