A mother-of-four has revealed she needs to have her gallbladder removed due to a gruelling battle with long covid.

Mel Watts, a blogger from the Central Coast, New South Wales, shared a post on Facebook on Tuesday, revealing the coronavirus ‘sucked the zing out of her’ and that she is suffering from ‘chronic fatigue, nausea and decreased mood’.

‘Nil appetite – all together with parenting four kids and owning a business isn’t really a Vegemite and cheese sandwich combo. I’m struggling – daily,’ she wrote.

Ms Watts, who often shares candid insights into motherhood to her 131,000 followers added that she was seeking the advice of a naturopath for help as she would ‘do anything to feel some what decent’ after catching coronavirus six months ago.

Long covid is when people previously infected with the virus suffer ongoing symptoms that go on longer than 12 weeks.

Some studies have shown as many as a third of all those infected with covid suffer long-term symptoms, including brain fog, anxiety, fatigue and abnormal breathing.

‘In a turn of events I have some answers for this long covid crapola. As a lot of you know CovId literally sucked the zing out of me – January I caught it being July I’m still struggling from it,’ she explained.

She added that she had ‘another round of bloods done and scans’ where they found her gallbladder ‘isn’t all that happy’. 

‘After talking to the surgeon today I need to get some more tests done and go on the waitlist for removal. 12-16 months wait time,’ she went on.

‘I’m also talking to naturopath tomorrow as at this point I would do anything to feel some what decent. 

‘I’ll swallow any potion if it could make me back to being me.

‘At the moment I’ve pretty much got chronic fatigue, nausea, light headed, extremely decreased mood or desires.

She added that she has a ‘huge amount of support’ but there is ‘nothing more anyone can do.

‘I’ve just got to keep going hoping the next day will be a little better. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though it seems dimmer than normal.

‘So I’m pretty absent as I try to resolve this and not get lost down a dark mental health tunnel,’ she went on.

Symptoms of long covid include shortness of breath, memory and concentration problems, changes to smell and taste, joint pain and mental health issues. 

What is long covid? 

Long Covid is used to refer to coronavirus symptoms which persist for months after the original infection.

A person is considered to have long Covid if their symptoms continue longer than four weeks after the initial infection.

Sufferers can experience a range of symptoms including extreme tiredness, chest pain, shortness of breath, and changes to taste and smell among others.

A dizzying array of symptoms have been attributed to long Covid, including: extreme tiredness (fatigue) shortness of breath chest pain or tightness problems with memory and concentration (‘brain fog’) difficulty sleeping (insomnia) heart palpitations dizziness pins and needles joint pain depression and anxiety tinnitus, earaches feeling sick, diarrhoea, stomach aches, loss of appetite a high temperature, cough, headaches, sore throat, changes to sense of smell or taste rashes
