Boy band concert horror as giant screen crushes dancers during Hong Kong show by Mirror

A giant video screen crushed two male dancers after one of two metal cords holding it up snapped during a concert yesterday evening.

The sixteen-by-ten foot screen fell on one dancer’s neck before it toppled on another performer at around 10.30pm during a concert by boyband Mirror in the Hong Kong Coliseum.

Hong Kong’s government has revealed it asked the concert organiser to ‘review and improve’ safety the day before the accident happened.

John Lee, Hong Kong’s chief executive, said: ‘I am shocked. I express sympathy to those who were injured and hope that they would recover soon.’

One of the dancer’s family are flying back from Canada to see him.

Three women at the concert, aged 16, 21 and 40, were treated for shock last night and one was sent to hospital.

Mr Lee ordered a comprehensive investigation of how the accident happened and a review of the safety rules of similar performance activities.

He added: ‘The involvement of high-level [officials], to ensure matters will be given attention and dealt with appropriately, is also important.’

Culture Secretary Kevin Yeung Yun-Hung said the investigation may last weeks and that experts would look at whether suspension wires failed because of the material they were made with or because of how they were operated.

He said: ‘We will embark on a very detailed investigation with support of relevant departments and some professionals to make sure we delve deep into the cause of the incident.

‘It is our responsibility and determination to ensure a similar incident will not happen again.’

Mirror, a 12-person band whose escapist lyrics were seized on by loving fans during pandemic restrictions, had another accident at the venue on Tuesday.

Bandmember Frankie Chan Sui-Fai fell from the stage in the second night of 12 planned concerts but was not seriously hurt.

MakerVille, the concert’s organiser, apologised today for Thursday’s accident at the band’s fourth show in the venue and said the rest of their eight shows were cancelled and fans would receive refunds for their tickets.
