What do Jennifer Aniston and Heidi Montag have in common?

Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Montag and Jennifer Grey all have one physical trait in common.

US scientists have now revealed nose jobs cause outsiders to rate people as being of higher than average attractiveness, success and health.

Researchers believe these perceptions cause those who have undergone nose-reconstruction surgery to benefit in social interactions.

They wrote: ‘These findings propose that patients experience an improvement in social interactions stemming from the positive effect of rhinoplasty surgery on observer perceptions.’

Rhinoplasty, the medical term for nose jobs, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the US, with around 200,000 operations being carried out each year.

In the UK, just over 1,000 procedures occur annually.

AGGRESSIVE BREAST CANCERS ARE ON THE RISE DUE TO ‘TEXTURED’ IMPLANTS, REPORT FINDS

Textured breast implants might be more dangerous than smooth ones, a report found earlier this month.

Previous research has linked breast implants to cancer, however, the new study from Penn State College of Medicine confirms that ‘textured’ implants – designed to stay in place more firmly – cause a rare, aggressive form of cancer that is difficult to treat.

The cancer is called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and the researchers warn cases are on the rise.

Textured implants became popular in the 1990s. Patients often choose them as their surfaces adhere to the tissue surrounding the implant, allowing them to stay in place in the breast pocket.

The first case of BIA-ALCL was reported in 1997, around the time textured implants became more appealing to plastic surgery candidates.

The researchers found BIA-ALCL affects around one in every 30,000 women with breast implants and almost all of these cases are associated with textured implants.

Out of the 95 patients whose cases were reviewed in the report, five died.

How the research was carried out

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in the US had 473 volunteers analyse images of 13 patients before and after having nose jobs.

The volunteers, who were mainly women with college degrees, were unaware of the patients’ surgery statuses.

Only patients with successful operations were included.

‘Patients experience an improvement in social interactions’

Results reveal nose jobs make people appear more attractive, successful and healthy.

The researchers wrote: ‘These findings propose that patients experience an improvement in social interactions stemming from the positive effect of rhinoplasty surgery on observer perceptions.

‘Furthermore, these results may improve physician-patient discussions about rhinoplasty surgery by providing a reference for an optimal outcome.

‘However, variability in surgical outcomes must be considered when establishing surgical expectations and considering the effect on social perceptions.’

The findings were published in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

Which celebrities have gone under the knife?

In 2008 Jennifer Aniston underwent cosmetic surgery to correct a deviated septum for the second time. A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage that divides the nose in half is significantly off center, which makes breathing difficult.

Jennifer said: ‘I had [a deviated septum] fixed. Best thing I ever did. I slept like a baby for the first time in years.’

Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Gray had her nose reconstructed shortly after the blockbuster hit was released in 1987, yet the operation completely changed her appearance.

She said: ‘I went into the operating room a celebrity and came out anonymous.

‘It was the nose job from hell. I’ll always be this once-famous actress nobody recognizes because of a nose job.’

Ex-star of the reality TV show The Hills Heidi Montag famously had 10 cosmetic operations in one day in 2010, saying ‘I had my nose redone, I had my chin shaved down, I had my breasts redone and my back shaped.’
