Muscular hero leapt into the River Thames to save woman

A muscular hero came out of the River Thames ‘looking like Daniel Craig’ with his top off after he saved the life of a woman who ended up in the water.

The unnamed man, who is in his 20s, quickly whipped off his shirt after noticing a woman ended up in the water in Chiswick, west London.

She was eventually rescued and police told the man he was a ‘hero’ after saving her – and his efforts were rewarded with a pot of tea from the landlord of the local pub, the Bell and Crown.

He later told officers at the scene that he didn’t even notice the cold and stunned locals were amazed by his bravery.

Phil Hardy, 52, from New York, is in London visiting friends and spotted the incident late last night.

He told MailOnline: ‘It was such a dramatic moment, the man – who was in his 20s – showed remarkable bravery.

‘There were about four people looking into the river and it was all very mysterious as to what was going on.

‘We could all see the flashing lights from a police boat and seven police cars, as well as an ambulance arrived on the scene too.

‘The next thing we saw was the strapping man coming out of the water with his top off and he started walking towards us.

‘He looked like Daniel Craig in James Bond and an officer said to him ‘you’re a hero’. He was a normal middle-class guy from London and was nonplussed about the situation.

‘The man needs to recognised – he was so brave and the pub landlord came out with a pot of tea – it was incredibly British.’

Mr Hardy said the officers asked the whether he felt the cold but he shrugged it off.

He added: ‘The man told the police that he didn’t feel the cold. He said that the cold was the last thing on his mind.

‘The woman could have died in the water and the guy, who was a specimen of a man, saved her life, there is no doubt in my mind about that.’

Mr Hardy, who works in marketing, said he had no idea how the woman ended up in the water last night but everyone there was relieved she was rescued.

A Met Police spokesman said: ‘Police were called at approximately 22:20hrs on Wednesday, 18 October to Kew Bridge, Chiswick, following reports of a person having jumped into the water.

‘Officers attended along with colleagues from the London Ambulance Service.

‘The person, a female aged in her 20s, was pulled from the water by members of the public by Strand-On-the-Green, near the Bell and Crown pub.

‘She did not suffer serious injuries and remains in hospital.’
