An Argentine journalist has been brought to tears by interviewing Lionel Messi, leaving the PSG star awkwardly not knowing how to react to the breakdown.
In the video, the journalist begins a conversation with the Argentina captain, but is quickly overcome by the man in front of him. Firstly with an appreciative slap of Messi’s knee before breaking into tears at the sight of the man sitting next to him.
It’s a reaction that’s probably not uncommon for Messi, however, the 35-year-old seems to not know how to react to the flood of emotion presented to him.
His immediate reaction is to smile and lean back on the sofa, looking particularly awkward in the situation. However, the smile soon evolves into kind laughter and a friendly hand on the journalist’s knee.

The Argentinian captain then then leans back and laughs at the situation in front of him
Messi eventually consoles the journalist and they are able to continue the interview again
Eventually, after Messi settles the interviewer from DIRECT TV Sports, he manages to compose himself and finish conducting his conversation with the PSG ace.
Messi’s reaction has sent fans to Twitter to discuss how he coped with the journalist’s raw emotion, with some appreciating the humbleness of how the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner dealt with the situation.
One user posted: ‘People saying Messi was nervous.
It’s the GOOD kind of nervous. The humble kind. What a person should have in the face of that level adoration. Otherwise, adulation starts to pollute/inflate egos.
Leo’s awkwardness is a result of a kinda purity and ability to stay down-to-earth.’
Some fans saw Messi’s reaction one of nervousness and praised his humility in the situation
However, others focussed more on how awkward Messi looked, with one fan saying: ‘Nah Messi’s reaction and body language is hilarious. Bro started laughing, most awkward guy ever.’
That view was shared by another reply on Twitter, who was more blunt in the review of the clip and said: ‘Messi is so awkward bro. Look at his reaction.’
Other fans were in full admiration of the awkwardness from Messi, and revealed they got emotional watching it – even though they had no idea what was being said.
‘Lmao the awkwardness from Leo. He’s nervous, out of words and don’t know what to do – so he just laughs. Man this vid is so pure that even I got emotional and I tell you what, I don’t know s**t about what they talked about. Just the vid itself made me emotional.’
Other fans on social media just saw the awkwardness from the video and Leo’s reaction
Messi will hope to bring the same sort of reaction from Argentine fans at next month’s World Cup, the tournament that he has already stated will be his last for his country.
Argentina are currently on a 35-match unbeaten run and go into the finals among the favourites to win the World Cup in Qatar.
They begin their campaign against Saudi Arabia and will then face Poland and Mexico in Group C.
Messi will be hoping to sign off from next month’s World Cup by finally winning the trophy
