Astro Labe charges upgraded for Tony Abbott headbutt

A DJ accused of headbutting Tony Abbott faces up to 10 years jail after charges against him were upgraded.

Astro ‘DJ Funknukl’ Labe allegedly attacked the former Prime Minister as he walked along the Hobart waterfront on September 21.

He was originally charged with common assault but now faces the more serious offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

The 38-year-old was wearing a ‘yes’ sticker when he encountered Mr Abbott but insisted the attack was just opportunistic.

‘It has absolutely nothing to do with marriage equality, that was just coincidental that someone had stuck a sticker on my jacket,’ he said after his arrest last month.

‘It was not what I was thinking about, I was thinking “there’s Tony Abbott, I’m going to headbutt him”.

‘It was nothing really remotely to do with that. It’s just about Tony Abbott — The f***ing worm that he is.

‘All it was is I saw Tony Abbott and I’d had half a skinful and I wanted to nut the c***.’

The self-confessed anarchist described Mr Abbot as an ‘evil c**t’ and admitted having a few drinks before the attack.

‘I was like “Tony, Tony”. I kind of trotted up behind him. I trotted up behind him, “I just want to shake your hand” and just went bang. Kind of missed it. Gave him a fat lip.’

Mr Abbott, who was awarded a top prize for boxing at Oxford and emerged without visible injury from the alleged encounter, wasn’t impressed by his alleged assailant.

‘He wasn’t very good at it I’ve got to say,’ Mr Abbott told Andrew Bolt, and described the alleged headbutt as ‘not very effective’ at a Hobart press conference on Friday.

‘The only damage was a very, very slightly swollen lip.’

Mr Abbott claimed it was an orchestrated attack as part of the same-sex marriage debate, despite Labe’s repeated denials.

Labe didn’t enter a plea at Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday and will re-appear on January 18.
