A stunning Australian rainforest that looks like something out of a fantasy movie is attracting keen hikers from all over the country. 

Nightcap National Park is in northern New South Wales near the Queensland border, an hour and 15 minute drive inland from Byron Bay. 

It has a series of stunning walking trails winding through the lush rainforest filled with enchanting waterfalls, crystal clear creeks, spectacular views and towering trees.

Stretching across more than 8,000 hectares of ancient forest, the Nightcap National Park lies within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area and is named after the newly discovered and endangered nightcap oak tree. 

Many of the forest’s waterfalls are flowing strongly after a bout of wet weather in the state’s north coast.

Popular attractions include the incredible Minyon Falls lookout that has views over the forest all the way to the coast as well as Boggy Creek Walk where visitors can take a refreshing dip in the clear pools along the creek.

Tall stranger fig and palm trees create a shady canopy while glow worms and glowing mushrooms light up the forest floor. 

A number of threatened and rarely seen animal species call the magnificent national park home including the Albert’s lyrebird and Fleay’s barred frog. 

Travellers are raving online about the picturesque park with one calling it ‘absolutely stunning’ with views ‘to die for’. 

Some of the park’s walking trails are closed until next year due to flood damage but there are still plenty open to explore.
