Melbourne Metro reveals new train station name suggestions

Shane Warne, Bunnings Sausage, Station McStationface, Vegemite, Dustin Martin, Winterfell and Burke and Wills.

These are some of the outlandish suggestions offered up by punters as potential names for five new underground train stations being built across Melbourne.

The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority received over 50,000 suggestions for station names after opening the competition up to members of the public.

Strangely, more than 50 people from 200 different countries including Myanmar and Colombia headed online to submit their own quirky station name suggestions.

A selection of the best names will now go before a government-appointed judging panel, who will announce the five winning names later this year.

Some of the more serious names being considered are Burke and Wills, named after the famous explorers, and Joan Kirner, after Victoria’s first female premier.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews reminded people to suggest their own names, posting a photo with a collection of humorous fake stations.

‘We have had an overwhelming response with an extraordinary 50,000 suggestions that reflect Victoria’s diversity, history and cheeky sense of humour,’ Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

‘Now the hard work begins for the advisory panel to assess submissions before compiling a shortlist of names for each station for the government to consider.’

‘The Metro Tunnel will free up the City Loop, Melbourne’s biggest bottleneck, creating space for more trains, more often.’
