The Chic List: My resolution? Go back to the future 

Happy New Year! I’m always excited at this time but also a little terrified of what lies ahead. A whole lot of big, life-changing stuff can happen in 12 months, can’t it?

I never make January self-improvement resolutions – especially those that involve punishing yourself with exercise or swapping delicious glasses of red for a juice cleanse. I’ll start living my best life when it stops getting dark at 3pm.

In my eyes, January is a month to cosy up under a blanket at home, light candles, watch Netflix and wear furry slippers. Better to worry about the new you come the first rays of spring sunshine.

I’ll be spending today curled up with a mug of tea and an old copy of British Vogue – March 1999, to be exact – which I’ve become rather addicted to dipping into. As well as looking forward, sometimes it’s fun to look back. I found my copy on Ebay for £20 and was mainly attracted to the cover line: ‘Posh Spice and David Beckham: The Pictures, The Interview’.

It’s just before their wedding. Posh has fallen out with Alexander McQueen because he wouldn’t let her into his recent big fashion show.

She says he’s not designing her wedding dress and, frankly, he can stick his clothes up his backside. David has bought her a diamond necklace and bracelet for Christmas – and she’s bought him a Ferrari.

There’s a very young-looking Jennifer Aniston peeping out of an advert for L’Oréal Elnett hairspray, because she’s worth it.

And the clothes from the 90s are amazing. I would wear them today in a heartbeat! So streamlined, so minimalist, so chic – and so much cheaper.

The most poignant article for me is ‘The Strange World of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’. It details how the former Calvin Klein PR – one of my favourite style icons – has become a recluse since marrying John F Kennedy Jr, ‘the sexiest man alive’.

The article ends with a quote from an old friend. ‘She’s not going to burn out, believe me. She’s far too smart and far too beautiful.

In five years’ time or maybe less, she’ll be on the cover of every magazine and all of New York will be eating out of her hand.’ Of course the terrible truth is that she would die in a plane crash four months later.

That’s what I mean about never knowing what the new year will bring – and why this month is certainly not a time to be punishing ourselves for not being slim or clean-living enough.

It’s a time to rejoice that we’ve made it to 2023. Although I wouldn’t mind going back to the 90s for those clothes…
