Woman charged with murder after cutting baby’s cord

A Kentucky woman has been charged with murder after local law enforcement said that she cut her baby’s umbilical cord with a pair of scissors.

Amanda Meade, 34, was indicted for the October 15 death of her little girl in Paintsville, Kentucky.

West Van Lear Fire Chief and Deputy Coroner Bill Robinson told EKB-TV that the woman called around 3pm, 30 minutes to an hour after she said that the baby had stopped responding. 

According to Robinson, the woman had given birth to the baby herself in a home that didn’t have any electricity or running water. 

State Medical Examiner’s Office added that the baby died from blood loss after the mother cut the cord. 

First responders were able to revive the baby but it died after living for another 20 minutes at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center, and was said to have moved an eye and a finger. 

Meade was charged with murder but also faces additional chargers for possession of methamphetamine and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

The murder charge – which has a possible sentencing of 20 to 50 years – has a bond of $50,000 and it is not known whether Meade has a lawyer. 

She is scheduled to be back in the courtroom on December 20.
