Champion mare Winx wins third consecutive Cox Plate title

Champion mare Winx has entered the history books again after becoming only the second horse ever to win three consecutive Cox Plate titles.

The six-year-old emerged triumphant in the group one sprint at Melbourne’s Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday, after being a firm favourite to take home the $3,000,000 prize money.

The win also continues the thoroughbred’s 22 strong victory streak, having lost just three times throughout her 32 start career.

Providing some fierce competition was Humidor and Folkswood who finished the race in second and third position respectively.

It follows a sensational year from the Chris Waller-trained horse that saw her take out the Turnbull Stakes in Flemington by six-and-a-half lengths.

Her turn at the Cox Plate makes her just the second horse to achieve a triple back-to-back title, after Kingston Rule did so in 1980, 1981 and 1982.

Phar Lap – Won twice in 1930 and 1931

So You Think – Won twice in 2009 and 2010

But despite Winx’s incredible performance, one record she has yet to beat is the fastest time on the 2040m sprint.

The personal best remains with Better Loosen Up, who won in 1990 with a time of two minutes and one second.

Jockey Hugh Bowman said following the race he was ‘lost for words’ but they were ‘in the presence of greatness’.

Earlier in the day the mare appeared relaxed and calm as she was brought to her stall to prepare for the run.

Plenty of punters jumped at the chance to see the mare up close and personal too, with huge crowds milling about the stable area before the race to catch a glimpse.
