Free abortion pills will be offered at four city-run health clinics in New York, mayor Eric Adams announced today.
From tomorrow, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene clinic at the Bronx will offer abortion medication, with three additional clinics in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens to begin dispensing the pills by the end of the year.
The move is part of a plan to healthcare inequalities for women in the city.
Mr Adams said in a speech today at City Hall alongside city health officials: ‘For too long, health and health care has been centered around men.
‘If men had periods, pap smears and menopause, they would get a paid vacation. And if men could get pregnant, we wouldn’t see Congress trying to pass laws restricting abortion.’
He added: ‘We have been standing on the sidelines of women’s health for too long, and I have personally seen firsthand how the health system is letting our women down.’
