Makeup guru Chloe Morello has tried out the ‘miraculous’ beauty trend for ‘underpainting’ your makeup – with incredible results.
Underpainting – which involves painting your concealer, contour, blush and sometimes even highlighter under your foundation – has gone viral on TikTok in recent months, with more than seven million views on the platform.
Devotees of the trend promise that it will give you a natural finish that makes the skin look as if the flush is subtly emanating from within.
‘I’m going to try the viral makeup artist Mary Phillips underpainting technique,’ Chloe posted in a recent TikTok video.

Chloe starts by putting highlighter and contouring cream on the ‘bones of the face’ – so on her brow bone, cheek bones, the bone around her nose and temples.
‘Then, she [Mary Phillips] used a highlight, but I couldn’t tell if it was a shimmery one or a light foundation,’ Chloe said in the video – dotting the shimmery product on either side of her nose, above her Cupid’s bow on her lips and on her brow bone.
‘Next, I did concealer,’ Chloe said – while dotting her concealer underneath her eyes and around any blemishes or imperfections.
Finally, Chloe added her foundation to the made up face. She used one from Dior before adding ‘sunkiss’ via a bronzer and blusher on top.
‘After that I just powdered my T-zone and it looks flawless,’ Chloe said.

More than 10,000 people who saw Chloe’s clip were quick to compliment her on her underpainting makeup look, writing things like ‘gorgeous’ and ‘this looks amazing’.
‘Cool technique, I’ll try this,’ one person wrote.
‘This is so gorgeous. The new colour suits you so well too,’ another added.
While underpainting is new to TikTok, different celebrities and makeup artists have been using the under-the-radar technique for years to create a softly sculpted look without the hassle of perfect application techniques.
Big-name fans include Scott Barnes and Mary Phillips, who look after the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber.

The reason why it works is because by putting the foundation on last, you are able to blend out any harsh lines from your bronzer and blusher.
There aren’t set rules on the order you should use products as long as the foundation is the last one.
However, even this is up for debate as Chloe showed you can touch up highlighter and blusher on the top.
The main point to note is that foundation needs to be applied sparingly and in places where it is most needed, so that you can see the remainder of the makeup coming through.
