- Lewis the stable cat works at WA Police headquarters keeping the stables clear
- His role is as resident rodent catcher but he is also fed cat food by officers
- A directive has now been issued to the team asking them not to feed Lewis
Being an official police animal means no ‘off days’ and rigid following of the letter of the law.
For stable cat Lewis, who is stationed with the WA Police mounted section at Maylands, that means catching vermin to keep the surrounding headquarters clean and rat-free.
And while Lewis does have a penchant for catching rodents, he also doesn’t mind a bit of kibble on the side, Perth Now reports.

Unfortunately a recent directive asked officers to stop buying the two-year-old cat food in an effort to improve his mouse-catching capabilities.
So even though less than $10 was being spent on cat food a week this was deemed an ‘unnecessary’ expense for the team.
‘Secondly… there needs to be a justification for use of public funds – and if Lewis is not working, he simply becomes a pet,’ WA Police said.

Officers are already offered to use their own money to buy Lewis special treats – to supplement the numerous rodents he’s supposed to be eating
Despite this the cat will not be cut from its routine feed cold-turkey and rather weaned off the food over due time.
