Paul McCartney-signed copy of The Lyrics: 1965 to Present garners $25.6K bid in charity auction

A charity auction for the nonprofit MusiCares through Julien’s Auction saw 50 musical mementoes drew big bucks from bidders on Sunday in Beverly Hills, California, with one-of-a-kind items donated by superstar artists such as Paul McCartney, Eminem and Taylor Swift, among many others.

The event was held in conjunction with the 65th annual Grammy Awards, which was held nearby at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles Sunday.

A copy of McCartney’s 2021 book The Lyrics: 1965 to Present – personally inscribed to the winner of the auction – sold for $25,600, a sum twenty-five times the original estimate of $1,000 over 33 bids in the auction.

The two-volume book, which features the legendary Beatle’s notes, photos, commentary and art, was dubbed ‘the gift item of the year and an essential addition to any fan’s library.’ 

The auction came after the famed entertainer was seen with wife Nancy Shevell in Los Angeles at Interscope x Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace party at the at Hollywood Palladium Saturday.

The highest-selling item was a pair of Eminem’s worn Nike Air Max sneakers, which went for $40,625 over 34 bids. The white sneakers (US Size 10) are signed ‘Shady’ by the rap icon on both shoes in black ink.

Rapper Margaritavillain won the sneakers after his fans created a GoFundMe account in hopes of aiding him in literally following in Eminem’s footsteps.

‘My new shoes previously owned, worn & signed by Eminem!’ Margaritavillain said in an Instagram post. ‘Later I’ll post more info & videos from the auction & maybe a victory freestyle.’

He continued: ‘Thank you to all the fans that made this happen! I’m in floored with all of your generosity… Thanks to you I’ll now be walking in #SlimShadys shoes!’

Another high-dollar item was a 2020 Epiphone DR-100EB acoustic guitar signed by Taylor Swift that sold for $25,000.

The guitar, which has a front featuring the image of Swift’s 2020 album evermore, features the singer’s signature in black marker with a heart drawn on the side. The auction spanned 22 bids, with the winning bid five times more than the original estimated value of $5,000.

Another guitar, donated by Aerosmith legend Joe Perry drew a $25,000 bid over 23 bids. 

The 2022 Joe Perry Signature Gibson Les Paul electric guitar was signed by the famed musician, who had previously played the instrument onstage in Las Vegas. The item came in a padded black Gibson bag along with a black guitar strap, spare parts and an owner’s manual.

BTS member j-hope’s black utility-style jumpsuit garnered a $21,875 bid over 22 bids. The South Korean rapper donned the ensemble for promotional photographs for his debut solo album Jack In The Box.

Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus donated a lot of items and services that went for $21,875. 

It included an exclusive Xounts NFT with art by Clay Nation; Xounts Champ Medici and Dr. Bombay sound systems and skins signed by Snoop Dogg; and a visit to Snoop Dogg’s recording studio The Compound for a recording session catered by Bored Taco, which is Cordell’s company.

Another unique item that sold included a vintage Hawaiian button-up shirt from Margaritaville singer Jimmy Buffett that is signed ‘Fins Up! J Buffett.’

The shirt, which has print of fish, surfers, islands, boats, and waves, sold for $12,800 over 29 bids.

David Lee Roth donated a painting titled Dark Ocean that sold for $10,240 over 17 bids. The acrylic on canvas painting is signed and dated by the former Van Halen frontman on the back.

Among the other notable names who donated items to the charity auction include Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Cher, Sting, Shaggy, Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Lenny Kravitz, Slipknot, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Harry Styles and The Who.

MusiCares said on its site that it aims to offer ‘preventive, emergency, and recovery programs supporting the health and welfare of the music community’ related to mental health & addiction recovery services, health services and human services.
