Consumer experts test and name the BEST multipurpose cleaning sprays of 2023 – and the ones that perform no better than plain water
- CHOICE revealed the best and worst multipurpose cleaners
- The best performing product was Bosistos Multipurpose spray
- Saba Organics Surface Sanitiser came in last
Australian consumer experts have put multipurpose and kitchen cleaning sprays to the test to reveal which ones are the best – and some performed no better than water.
CHOICE tested 46 different cleaners for their effectiveness and value for money and found the $5 Bosistos Multipurpose spray came out on top scoring a stellar 95 per cent.
Not all the cleaners were met with rave reviews, however, with the $8.50 Saba Organics Surface Sanitiser and the $6 Rhythm Cleaning Vinegar Kitchen Surface Spray both scoring 25 per cent – the same as plain water.

CHOICE cleaning expert Ashley Iredale said any multipurpose cleaner will do a fine job but the test shows which products stand out from the best.
‘You could grab just about any old multipurpose cleaner off the supermarket shelves and it would do an acceptable job – after all, you can always just scrub a little longer,’ she said.
‘But if you want a product that really works, make sure you’re choosing wisely.’
Experts recommended eight products which had a score of 80 per cent or more while every other cleaner in the test received a rating of less than 50 per cent.
Also receiving an impressive 95 per cent behind Bosistos was the Citro Clean Super Concentrate Multi-Purpose Cleaner which retails at $9.75 and the $5 Nifti All Purpose Cleaner.
While the brand Rhythm fared poorly with its cleaning vinegar, its All Purpose cleaner ($6) came in just behind the front runners with an impressive score of 90 per cent.
Dettol’s Healthy Clean Kitchen cleaner ($4) outshone products more than double its price with scoring 85 per cent along with Pine O Cleen Brand New Day Multi-Purpose Cleaner ($6).
Windex Surface & Glass Multi-Purpose Cleaner ($5.70) in both the floral and mountain fresh scents were the best value for money costing just 76 cents per 100ml and earned a rating of 80 per cent.
Plain water was tested for its multipurpose cleaning abilities and scored 25 per cent however four products failed to outperform it.
Also rated 25 per cent was Saba Organics Surface Sanitiser ($8.50), Rhythm Cleaning Vinegar Kitchen Surface Spray ($6), Morning Fresh Surface Disinfectant ($4) and Diggers Multi-Purpose Surface Cleaner ($4.80).
The experts warned against ‘overpriced’ cleaning vinegars and to be cautious of any products claiming to be ‘eco’ friendly.
‘We’ve often found products that shout proudly about their ‘eco’ credentials are as expensive as they are ineffective,’ Ashley said.
‘But Bosistos shows that if you choose wisely, you can have a clean kitchen and a clean conscience, without it costing you the earth.’
While supermarket-brand products usually stack up against big brands, CHOICE experts found this wasn’t the case when to came to multipurpose sprays with none scoring more than 45 per cent.
Woolworths’ Strike Pro Multipurpose Spray Cleaner ($2) and Macro Multipurpose Cleaner ($4.10) both got a mark of 30 per cent.
