Interior designer Roxanne Roxas: These are the 10 things that make your home ‘look cheap’

An interior designer has listed the 10 things in your home that make it ‘look cheap’, and the best décor combinations to pair in order to make your space look stylish and expensive.

Roxanne Roxas is an acclaimed interior designer from the Philippines, and her work has featured in a number of interiors magazines and publications.

Recently, the design pro shared a TikTok video on the 10 things to banish from your home if you don’t want it to look cheap, as well as the fabric combinations to know about that will elevate any area.

Top of Roxanne’s list to banish from your home forever is small artwork, which can look out of place on large walls.

Next, she said you’ll want to avoid exposed wires, such as those coming from your TV or internet connection, as well as curtains that are too short for your room.

‘Creased bedsheets make a space look cheap,’ Roxanne said.

The expert also highlighted outdated lighting, white UVPC front doors and cluttered worktops as making a home look worse than it is.

‘I would ditch over the door coat hangers, clutter on open shelves in a room and canvas artwork,’ Roxanne concluded.

More than 200,000 people who saw the video were quick to share their own opinions:

‘The cluttered worktops looks very homely to me,’ one person wrote.

‘Agree on this,’ another added.

In another clip shared on Instagram, Roxanne shared why there are certain fabric combinations that just work in a home.

Examples include rattan and walnut, marble and blackwood, and concrete and oak.

She also loves to see velvet and boucle paired together, as well as linen and leather and mohair and cotton.

‘Fabric helps elevate the interior décor in spaces because it adds visual weight and balance,’ Roxanne said. 

‘These just work together.’
