It may look like a hallway cabinet, but this chic decor hides something else entirely: ‘This is THE hack of 2023’
- Aussie DIY-ers are hiding their rubbish bins in a laundry cabinet
- It has become a popular trend to use the Kmart cabinet as a rubbish unit
Aussies are transforming their rubbish bins into chic hallway cabinets using a budget buy from Kmart.
One clever mum decided to use the store’s $65 laundry cabinet as a cupboard to store her bins away from sight, and the trend caught on immediately.
Hundreds are racing to the store to get the cabinet and try out the hack, many are sharing the final product online.
People say the cabinets are a ‘life-saver’ because they have two separate doors, one for recycling and one for general waste.
‘Following today’s excellent laundry hamper hack, I went and did the same!’ one mum said after she saw the clever hack online.

Before and after: One clever mum decided to use the cabinet as a cupboard to store her bins away from sight, and the trend caught on immediately
People say the cabinets are a ‘life-saver’ because they have two separate doors, one for recycling and one for general waste
She got rid of her two silver bins, and inserted a $16 Bunnings 27 litre swing top bin into each cabinet door.
The laundry cabinet is designed for storing and sorting clean and dirty laundry, it’s made from fiberboard and has a cloth laundry bag in each door.
People are getting creative with their transformations and are painting, upholstering and decorating the cabinet so no one suspects it contains bins.
‘Jumped on the Laundry Hamper bandwagon. Pretty Schmick looking rubbish bin,’ one woman said.
She painted her cupboard with a grey Rustoleum chalk paint and sealed the cupboards with carnauba wax from Bunnings.
She then replaced the original doorknobs with wooden and gold decorated versions.
She also decorated the top of the table with a vase of flowers, a reed diffuser and two more vases.
Hundreds of people were impressed with the clever hack.
‘Seriously, it’s a great product that makes a horrid bin look nice,’ one woman said.
‘I think everyone is jumping on the bin bandwagon – it’s genius,’ another wrote.
However, a lot of people had the same question – do the bins get smelly inside the cabinet?
Many people said they hadn’t yet noticed a smell, and more people have opted to use it just to divide recycling meaning there is less risk of developing a bad odour.
