Phil Foden reveals he has endured ‘one of the worst parts of my career’ after ‘not playing as much’

Phil Foden claimed that he has been going through one of the lowest periods of his short yet hugely successful career of late at Manchester City. 

Speaking to ITV after Tuesday night’s FA Cup action, the 22-year-old revealed that he has been struggling with ‘one of the worst parts’ of his meteoric rise as one of the brightest young talents in the game at City.

The England starlet has spent time out of the side through injury, and has found his place in the starting XI under threat with continued good form from Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish. 

But he declared himself back to full fitness, and put in a performance to back that claim up with two goals on the night against Bristol City as the reigning Premier League champions ran out 3-0 winners in the FA Cup Fifth Round clash. 

And although the 22-year-old conceded that all players go through peaks and troughs in their careers, he wasted no time in making his thoughts known, admitting he was left ‘frustrated’ by events.  

‘I feel much better with my feet. I feel 100% fit now and comfortable. 

‘[It has] Been one of the worst parts of my career but everyone goes through them and it is how you react. 

‘Discomfort in my feet and not playing as much. I love to play football and when I don’t I am a bit frustrated.’

Having become one of his side’s key players in recent seasons, Foden has struggled to make the impact that he has shown himself capable of. 

Part of that is down to injuries. He has been left out of the squad several times this season, and mentioned discomfort in his feet in his post-match interview. 

But with his team-mates also vying for the same spot as him – and performing well themselves – he has struggled for regular game times over the course of the current season at times. 

Against Bournemouth on Saturday, the Three Lions star completed more than 60 minutes of action in the Premier League for just the second time since December.
