You’ve been buttering bread all wrong! Woman seriously divides opinion with snap of an upturned loaf

A man has sparked debate over a bread-buttering hack that left carb enthusiasts seriously divided.

Taking to Reddit, the British man revealed his methodology involves ‘upending’ an unsliced loaf, slathering the dairy spread on one end, and then cutting the slice off.

Sharing a photo of the creation, u/GreenWoodDragon said the trick is a childhood habit.

‘When I was a kid it was not unusual to upend a loaf, butter it, then slice off the buttered round,’ they penned. ‘Does anyone else still do this?’

While some were baffled, many were impressed by the hack, which could minimise the risk of tearing the bread if the butter is hard.

One suggested: ‘At a guess: cheap sliced bread sometimes disintegrates when you try to put cold butter on it and it forms holes. If the slice is still on the loaf, it’ll have more resistance?’

‘My Granny used to do this,’ another recalled. ‘I think it is because it is more difficult to butter very thinly sliced bread which was considered “elegant” back in the day”.’

A third praised: ‘This is genius! Very few things send me into a rage like butter that won’t spread without ripping your slice of bread does.’

But not everyone was so supportive, with some appearing stumped by the newfound slicing strategy.

One commenter simply remarked: ‘For the love of God, why??’

‘Never did this, and this post is the first I’ve heard of doing it this way,’ another admitted.

Some bread and butter fans even took to sharing their own hacks.

‘I’ve been doing that for years, it works perfectly, 10 seconds isn’t long and probably saves time compared to trying to spread it hard.’

They added that the technique comes with time.

‘You can learn how long it takes in your own microwave so that you don’t turn the butter to liquid, it should come out still solid but spreadable,’ the continued.

One foodie revealed: ‘I cut off small slices of of butter from the fridge (the amount I need) and put it on a saucer and microwave it for 10-15 seconds and then it’s spreadable.

‘Blows my mind people still faff around tearing bread up pushing rock hard butter around.

‘You can also warm the knife under the hot tap but I found that to be a dissatisfactory solution, causes the butter to slide off the knife and fall off making a mess.’

A second frying pan aficionado agreed, writing: ‘I resorted to melting the butter in the frying pan and just dropping a round in taking it out and then on to the next… bit I’m lazy like that….’
