You’re not cleaning your home properly: Stylist spills the areas you forget about most – even if your space looks tidy
- Brisbane mum and stylist Liz Amaya listed fives places people forget to clean
- The homemaker urged people to wash floor mats, wipe down remotes, and more
A mum has revealed the five areas people always forget to clean during Sunday resets and frequent deep cleans.
Stylist Elizabeth Amaya, from Brisbane, said that there are several places where dirt and debris can build up even in a ‘mostly-clean’ home.
The mum-of-four urged people to wash their floor mats, vacuum under and behind furniture, and regularly wipe down the tops of artwork and frames.
Liz also encouraged people to wipe down their remotes and properly clean the tops of pendant lights.
She was originally shocked to find the grimy places lurking in everyone’s home, and made it a mission to direct people to their best and most efficient cleans.

The Brisbane mum posted a video on her popular Instagram account that showed a realistic portrayal of her scrubbing all the ‘forgotten’ areas spotless.
Floor mats
She began by dusting off her floor mats and then placing them in the washing machine.
While it depends on the area you’re living in and how dirty the mat gets, it’s generally recommended to wash your floor mats every week or fortnight.
Under and behind furniture
It might be a chore to move furniture around every time you vacuum, but dust bunnies and flyaway dirt from shoes and open windows settle under and behind sofas quite easily.
Moving furniture often also prevents you from losing things you accidentally drop behind appliances.
Tops of artwork and frames
You should wipe down the tops and sides of all artworks and frames in your home as often as you dust other furniture.
People often get caught up with looking at the beautiful painting or photo to notice the dust it collects.
Television, air-conditioner, garage remotes
Many remotes – mostly television and sound system ones – get stuck with food particles between the buttons because of people snacking while they catch up on their favourite shows.
You can carefully wipe them down with a microfibre cloth and use Q-tips for any dirt stuck between the buttons.
Tops of pendant lights
Use a damp cloth to wipe down the tops and base of pendant lights every week.
Insects often flock to lights and leave micro droppings on them, so it is best to disinfect them regularly to avoid a build up.

Many were shocked by how often they forget to clean the spaces Liz mentioned.
‘It’s amazing how much dust builds up on the top of artworks!’ one woman said.
‘Thank you for the reminder! These are truly the worst areas.’
‘I always forget the remote controls – time to wipe them down!’
