How woman cleaned her filthy thongs in seconds using a surprising $5 product

  • A Queensland woman used eucalyptus oil to rub dirt out of her thongs
  • She had been struggling to get them clean before stumbling upon the solution

A woman had been struggling to clean her thongs for months when she stumbled on a genius solution which saw them sparkling in seconds.

Jacqui, from Queensland, lives in a pair of blue Archie’s thongs and they developed a layer of stubborn, thick dirt after prolonged wear.

The woman tried and failed to get dirt stains out with soap, which is when she turned to a more unconventional option.

She rubbed eucalyptus oil into the soles of the thongs until the dirt and discolouration simply washed off.

The woman shared a photo of one clean thong compared to the dirt caked over the other.

‘I tried to clean these a few times in the past, but I tried some eucalyptus oil today and boom, baby!’ she captioned the photo in a popular Facebook group.

Eucalyptus oil is extremely versatile: it is a natural cleaner, freshener, and germ-killer.

Because of its natural disinfectant properties, eucalyptus oil also works well as a chemical-free floor and laundry cleaner.

Sold in chemists and health food shops for roughly $5 per bottle, eucalyptus oil is typically used as a herbal medicine to treat common ailments like nasal congestion and asthma.

Diluted variations can also be applied to the skin to soothe ulcers or chronic conditions like arthritis.

Many others shared the various methods they used to clean their thongs.

‘I use toothpaste and an old nail brush on my peach thongs. I’ve had them for three years and there’s no discolouration this way.’

‘Shaving cream is usually the go for me,’ a third said. ‘I just cover my thongs in it, leave them for 30 minutes, and then scrub gently with an old toothbrush.’

Several admitted to putting their thongs in the washing machine along with their towels – while a lone woman claimed to wash her slippers in the dishwasher.

Eucalyptus oil also works brilliantly as a stain remover.

An Australian mum recently found an unlikely use for the essential oil as a chemical-free stain remover that lifts ’90 percent’ of marks from soiled clothing.

After a permanent marker leaked onto the front of her white hoodie, the woman posted in a Facebook cleaning group asking members for advice on getting it out.

People recommended soaking the stain in the essential oil for 30 minutes, then rinsing it with water – a method she said removed almost every trace of the purple blotch.

She posted photos of the jumper taken before and after applying eucalyptus with the caption: ‘It worked so well! I rinsed the stain with water and squeezed the extra out as much as I could [to ensure] the colour didn’t run.’

The mum said she poured bleach over the faded stain before washing the hoodie which emerged from the machine in perfect condition.

Photos taken before and after the oil was applied have gone viral, racking up 1,600 ‘likes’ and dozens of comments with one woman branding the revelation ‘revolutionary’.

‘I wouldn’t have thought you could get that stain out, great work,’ said another.

A third said it was ‘great to see the result of suggestions’ and encouraged others to post before and after photos in the Facebook group.

‘It’s good to see what actually works,’ she added.

A fourth said: ‘Oh my gosh! I saw this post last night and even showed my husband and told him that I didn’t think it would ever come out. I’m off to show him this.’
