Thousands of zombies parade through Sydney to for charity

For the ninth year in a row, Sydneysiders out for a Saturday afternoon stroll were ambushed by what looked like some stray extras from the cast of The Walking Dead.

But it was actually the Sydney Zombie Walk 2017, initiated by creative university student Michael Berman in 2009 to raise money for charity.

The annual event, where people dress up as zombies or as undead versions of their favourite characters has only grown over the years.

‘Running the zombie walk has been the highlight of my life over the past eight years,’ said Mr Berman.

‘Seeing all of you get together just to be a little silly in the middle of the city has brought endless joy to my heart.

‘We’ve donated tens of thousands of dollars to [The Brain Foundation] over the years, and they’re a very worthy cause.’

The walk raises awareness and raise funds for The Brain Foundation, which is dedicated to funding world-class research Australia-wide into neurological disorders, brain disease and brain injuries.

With more than a thousand people dragging themselves through Prince Alfred Park this afternoon, over $10,000 was raised for the charitable organisation.

Along the way, participants were treated to touch-ups by makeup artists, food trucks with Zombie-themed treats, Zombie exhibits, competitions and prizes.

This year, the featured exhibition was a terrifying recreation of the camp site from The Walking Dead with replica of Daryl’s motorbike.

Zombies who had some energy left after the march then moved onto the Undead After Party at the Shark Hotel.
