MAFS: Dan Webb makes court request after boiler room scam charges

A former Married At First Sight star charged over his alleged involvement in a boiler room scam syndicate has made a surprising request before a Queensland court.

Daniel Phillip Webb was committed to stand trial on two charges of fraud following a hearing at Brisbane Magistrates Court in 2021.

Mr Webb, who rose to fame as one of the grooms on season six of the popular reality show, is alleged to have pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars dispersed by one of the companies linked to the cold-call scam syndicate.

Brisbane District Court on Tuesday was told Mr Webb wished to vary his bail conditions to travel overseas to Mexico for his brother Sam’s wedding.

The court was told he was restricted in applying for a passport under his current bail obligations.

District Court Judge Paul Smith noted Mr Webb had previously travelled overseas and had no breaches of bail.

Judge Smith said Mr Webb’s proposed itinerary would need further approval from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

‘I’m inclined to make the draft order and place it on the file,’ he said.

Judge Paul Smith granted the variation on the condition Webb have his travel itinerary approved by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Crown before he departs.

Conditions seven and eight of Mr Webb’s bail agreement will be varied to read that he cannot apply for a passport or travel internationally with the newly added exception of Mexico during April 2023 only.

Mr Webb’s matter will return to court at a later date.

Police allege the boiler room scam, which included multiple people other than Mr Webb, would cold call victims and offer investments in products that did not exist.

It is alleged the scammers ran a call centre, referred to as a ‘boiler room’ by police, involving sales people pressuring unsuspecting victims to invest money thinking they would make good returns. 

Companies linked to the investments would allegedly disappear and result in investors losing their money.

It is alleged the syndicate duped more than $20million from hundreds of victims in 2013 and 2014.
