My stepmother wants to wear this dress to my wedding – but everyone says she’s trying to be the ‘main character’
Finding the perfect dress to wear to a loved one’s wedding can be daunting, but some people just can’t get their head around the golden rule of never outshining the bride.
Case in point is a stepmother, believed to be from the US, who wants to wear a champagne-colored gown on the big day, covered in floral embellishments.
Posting on Reddit’s Wedding Attire Approval page, a commetner posted a snap of the vibrant dress, saying: ‘Stepmom of the Bride wants to wear this…’
The gown, which can be bought on Etsy for £299 and New Zealand website Zapakanz.com for $320, is embroidered with colourful flowers, but didn’t go down well with Redditors.
One person wrote: ‘Beautiful dress, absolutely inappropriate for someone who is not the main character.’

The formal floor length dress is a stunning champagne shade, and is also cinched at the waist.
However users questioned whether it was appropriate to wear to someone’s nuptials.
One said: ‘Agreed. I see this as a ‘center of attention dress’.
Someone else wrote: ‘I think if it could be feasibly worn as a wedding dress by the bride, it’s not appropriate for anyone else to wear. And I’d say this falls very firmly into that category.’
While a fourth wrote: ‘I know people are saying this is too white, but this could easily be a wedding dress. It’s floral with a white background.
‘It 100% has too much white. The white rule isn’t about being mistaken for a bride, it’s about not wearing dresses similar to a wedding dress. This with any pastel under layer is problematic.

However users questioned whether it was appropriate to wear to someone’s nuptials with many suggesting that the stepmother was probably trying to ‘overshadow the Bride’
‘Mostly because those look white in full sun, from far away or on film. It would be fine with a dark one though. If I was a guest I would judge the hell out of someone who wore this to a wedding.’
Many suggested that the stepmother was probably trying to ‘overshadow the Bride.’
One person wrote: ‘Is the stepmom trying to overshadow the Bride? If so, then this is definitely the dress to do so in.’
Another said: ‘No one is going to mistake her for the bride. If you think she’s wearing it to throw fuel on the fire, don’t give her any fuel. Nothing will take the wind out of her sails faster than telling her how nice she looks in it.’
While another said: ‘Rude. Self centered. Unkind. Hard NO! I’m so sorry you are in this position and hope you have support.
‘Was recently mother of groom. I was conscious of my role and while I wanted to look nice, my goal was to blend in photos. And, I’m someone who loves dressing up. Best wishes to you.’
A fourth wrote: ‘That dress is … a lot. Stepmom likes attention, I take it? It doesn’t matter, though. She will just look kind of silly. I don’t think I’d fight her on it. Everyone is going to be focused on you and your dress!’
